60fps with ray tracing becomes the baseline target

Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15 on PlayStation 5 and will be PS5 Pro Enhanced. During the August preview cycle, Insomniac clarified an especially interesting detail about the standard console version.

Performance Mode targets 60 frames per second while keeping ray tracing enabled on the base PS5. According to the team, the game was developed around that objective from early production, and Performance Mode is now the default presentation.

That represents a notable shift in priorities. Previous Insomniac games already offered different combinations of frame rate and ray tracing, but Wolverine is being built around a fluid presentation suited to extremely fast close-range combat.

The gameplay explains the priority

Wolverine fights at extremely close range. He rapidly launches himself between targets, parries attacks, activates Techniques and can move through several Rage tiers that make his attacks even more aggressive.

In a system like this, frame rate does more than make animation look smoother. Higher temporal resolution also improves visual response during parries, dodges and rapid target changes.

Insomniac is therefore connecting a technical choice directly to the character's behavior. Logan is not a hero observing the battlefield from a safe distance; he is constantly crossing space to engage multiple enemies at close range.

Ray tracing remains active at that frame rate

Maintaining ray tracing in a 60fps mode obviously requires compromises elsewhere in the rendering pipeline. Insomniac has not yet published a complete breakdown of internal resolution, detail settings or individual ray-tracing features for every mode.

It would therefore be premature to claim native 4K or assign specific reflection, shadow or lighting settings to Performance Mode without independent measurements.

The useful confirmed information is simpler: the studio says ray tracing remains part of the standard console's Performance Mode instead of being restricted to a lower-frame-rate visual preset.

PS5 Pro adds enhanced PSSR

PlayStation's official page confirms that Marvel’s Wolverine uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution on PS5 Pro. Sony specifically references the enhanced version of PSSR to improve image quality and frame rates.

The PlayStation Store also labels the game PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony has not, however, published a complete breakdown of Pro graphics modes or detailed numerical comparisons against the standard console.

That means it is too early to automatically assign a higher resolution or frame rate to every PS5 Pro mode. PSSR support is confirmed; the exact structure of the graphics presets still needs to be documented or measured.

Insomniac is using more than the GPU

The official presentation also confirms DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger support designed to communicate the impact of Wolverine's claws and other interactions.

The PS5 SSD is being used to reduce loading during the globe-spanning adventure, while Tempest 3D Audio is intended to improve positional awareness during incoming attacks and environmental sound.

Those features are more conventional for a modern PlayStation Studios release, but they reinforce the fact that Wolverine is being built specifically around PS5 hardware. Sony confirms there is no PlayStation 4 version.

The real verification begins with final technical analysis

Insomniac's statements are promising, but they describe a target and a technical design. They do not yet replace measurements of the retail build.

The key thing to watch on September 15 will therefore be Performance Mode stability: frame rate during the heaviest fights, reconstruction quality, dynamic resolution behavior and how ray tracing holds up when destruction, particles and enemies accumulate.

If the standard PS5 genuinely sustains a 60fps ray-traced presentation through the game's most violent encounters, Wolverine could become an interesting demonstration of what Insomniac has learned from optimizing its technology across the PS5 generation. For now, the technical promise is strong; the final numbers still have to come from the finished game.
